Why Ethical & Sustainable Travel Matters

At Pacific Discovery, we don’t just take students abroad: we build meaningful, responsible experiences that respect people, planet, and place.

At Pacific Discovery, we don't just take you abroad, we help you build meaningful, responsible experiences that respect people, plant and place. Ethical and sustainable Gap Year Programs are important to create a positive travel experience, not only for you, but the destination and the locals within it.

Here's how we keep travel ethical and impactful on our Gap Year Programs:

  • We Support Local.
We work directly with local guides, family-run accommodation, and community-led projects. The people you will meet aren't just your hosts, they're teachers, storytellers, and partners to your learning.

  • We Minimize Our Footprint.
We teach Leave No Trace practices, travel in small groups, and encourage you to be a conscious consumer. Sustainability is part of our Gap Year Abroad curriculum.

  • We Value Cultural Exchange.
You don't just observe on a program, you participate. From learning hands-on traditional cooking in Thailand to understanding Indigenous land use in New Zealand and Australia, our Gap Year Programs are rooted in respect.

  • We Protect Wild Places.
All of our Gap Year Abroad and Semester Abroad programs include conservation work, from reef health assessments in Hawaii to beach clean-ups in Bali. You'll see first-hand how ecosystems thrive when you take care of them.

Why does Ethical and Sustainable Travel matter?

Because travel can be a force for good. When done right, it creates global citizens, cultural empathy, and positive impact.
