Gap Year Advice · 9 min read

Two continents. Two completely different worlds. Both extraordinary.

If you have narrowed your gap year search to a Pacific Discovery semester program and you are sitting with Southeast Asia in one hand and South America in the other, this guide is for you. It covers what each program actually involves week by week, how they compare across adventure, culture, service learning, and challenge, and the questions worth asking yourself before you decide.

There is no wrong answer here. Both programs have produced some of the most transformative experiences in Pacific Discovery's 25-year history. The right one depends entirely on what you are ready for.

Why Pacific Discovery? The Foundation Behind Both Programs

Before comparing the two, it is worth being clear about what both programs share. Because the foundation is what makes either one worth choosing.

Pacific Discovery has been running immersive gap year programs since 1999. Over 25 years, thousands of students from the US, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and beyond have completed programs that combine genuine cultural immersion, hands-on service learning, outdoor adventure, and structured personal development.

Both the Southeast Asia and South America Gap Semesters are built on the same core architecture:

Bespoke program design. Every Pacific Discovery program is built around a carefully curated combination of experiences that no standard tour operator could replicate. Local partnerships developed over decades, community relationships built on trust, and an educational framework that goes well beyond sightseeing. These are not off-the-shelf itineraries. They are programs that have been refined through 25 years of learning what genuinely transforms students.

Small groups. Both programs run with a maximum of 14 students. That is not a marketing line — it is a structural decision that shapes everything. Small groups mean real relationships with instructors, genuine connection with local communities, and an experience that adapts to the group rather than moving a crowd through a checklist.

Triple accreditation. Pacific Discovery holds accreditation from the Gap Year Association, the Year Out Group, and OutdoorsMark. This matters for college deferrals, financial aid applications, and any student who wants to earn college credit while on program.

Experienced instructors. Both programs are led by experienced instructors who know their regions deeply and are present with students through every challenge and every highlight.

College credit available. Both programs offer optional college credit through Pacific Discovery's accredited academic partners.

Everything included. All accommodation, meals, in-country transport, activities, excursions, service learning projects, and 24/7 support. The Southeast Asia Gap Semester is priced at USD $15,000. The South America Gap Semester is USD $15,500. Both require flights on top.

Southeast Asia Highlights: What Students Experience Week by Week

Bangkok and ancient Thailand. The program opens in Bangkok — loud, dazzling, and completely overwhelming in the best way. Students explore the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun before cycling through the UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, ancient capitals that feel like something out of an adventure film.

Elephant conservation near Chiang Mai. Three days at an ethical elephant sanctuary — no riding, no performance, just students walking alongside rescued elephants through forested jungle, preparing their food, and experiencing one of the most moving encounters available anywhere in the world. This is followed by community service near Mae Win and a Buddhist meditation retreat that consistently ranks among the most meaningful experiences on the program.

Hill tribe communities in northern Thailand. Students live with hill tribe communities in the northern highlands, participating in traditional activities and community projects, before a student-led expedition section that builds real independence and decision-making.

The Mekong River, Laos. A slow boat down the legendary Mekong River is one of the great rites of passage in Southeast Asia. Students cruise through remote river communities, trek to the Kuang Si Waterfalls, and experience a pace of life that is genuinely unlike anything in the modern world.

Vietnam: history, food, and Halong Bay. Students cycle through the Vietnamese countryside, navigate the food culture of Hoi An, and sail between towering limestone islands in Halong Bay — one of the most spectacular natural environments on earth.

Cambodia and Angkor Wat. The program closes in Cambodia with a visit to the temples of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, before a final student-led independent travel section in southern Thailand and the beaches of Krabi.

Service learning across four countries. From elephant conservation and mangrove planting in Thailand to supporting a local food access centre and working with community development organisations across Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, service learning is woven through the entire program rather than confined to one week.

The South America Gap Semester at a Glance

Destinations: Peru, Ecuador, Galapagos Islands

Price: USD $15,500 plus flights (estimated USD $2,500)

This is the program for students ready to be physically and intellectually challenged in equal measure. Ancient civilisations and living ecosystems. Andean highlands and Amazon rainforest. The most biodiverse islands on earth.

South America Highlights: What Students Experience Week by Week

Cusco and the Sacred Valley. The program opens in Cusco, the heart of the Incan Empire, where students are immediately immersed in Peruvian culture through a service project with a local community and daily Spanish lessons. Visits to the ruins of Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, and Moray ground students in a civilisation whose engineering and agricultural sophistication still astonishes historians.

The Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu. Four days of biking, zip-lining, trekking, and natural hot springs culminating in a sunrise hike to Machu Picchu. It is one of the most physically demanding and genuinely rewarding weeks on any Pacific Discovery program. Students who complete it consistently describe it as one of the greatest experiences of their lives.

Spanish immersion and the Llama Pack Project. Back in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, students dive into their second volunteer project with the Llama Pack Project, founded by Alejandra and Jorge. This project works to recover traditional uses and breeding of carrier llamas, working with indigenous communities on environmental education, sustainable rural development, and the conservation of Andean mountain ecosystems. Students help with a social enterprise replicating a traditional Andean village and trek through the highlands with a llama pack — an experience that has no equivalent anywhere else in the world.

Lake Titicaca and the Bolivia border. Students travel to the world's highest navigable lake, visiting the floating Uros islands and the island of Taquile, where indigenous communities have maintained their traditional way of life almost entirely unchanged for centuries.

Ecuador: the Amazon, the Andes, and the highlands. The program crosses into Ecuador for a week in the Amazon rainforest, making chocolate from cacao, meeting indigenous communities, and experiencing the extraordinary biodiversity of the jungle. Students then move through Ecuador's highland communities and cloud forests on the way to the coast.

The Galapagos Islands. The final two weeks are spent in the Galapagos, the living laboratory that inspired Darwin's theory of evolution. Students snorkel with sea turtles, marine iguanas, and hammerhead sharks, kayak through crystal-clear lagoons, and participate in reforestation projects alongside local conservation scientists. These islands are home to wildlife found nowhere else on earth, and the experience of being among them without barriers or stages is unlike anything else on any Pacific Discovery program.

You want to experience the Mekong River. You want to see elephants in a setting where they are genuinely cared for.

Choose South America if:

You are ready to be physically pushed. You want structured Spanish immersion alongside your cultural experiences. You are drawn to ancient civilisations, the living legacy of the Inca Empire, and the extraordinary ecological wonders of the Galapagos Islands. You want to contribute to community conservation work at a high level — the South America program carries a high service learning rating for a reason. What Both Programs Guarantee

Regardless of which one you choose, you will come home with things that are genuinely difficult to develop any other way: the confidence that comes from navigating unfamiliar situations far from home, the empathy that develops through real relationships with communities very different from your own, the self-awareness that emerges when everything familiar is removed, and the clarity of purpose that almost every Pacific Discovery alumnus names as the most lasting outcome of their program.

That is not marketing language. It is what 25 years of student outcomes consistently show.
