Cost is one of the first questions families ask about gap year programs, and one of the hardest to answer clearly. Program fees vary widely, what is included varies even more, and the headline price is rarely the whole picture. A program that looks expensive at first glance may include accommodation, meals, activities, guides, and in-country transport for three months. One that looks cheaper may not include any of those things.

This guide breaks down what gap year programs actually cost, what those fees typically include, and how to fund a gap year through scholarships, financial aid, and other options, including what Pacific Discovery offers.

What do gap year programs cost?

Gap year program fees depend on three main factors: duration, destination, and what is included. A four-week summer program in one country will cost significantly less than a 14-week semester program crossing multiple destinations. As a general guide, here are typical price ranges for structured, accredited gap year programs:

Summer (2 to 6 weeks)
$3,000
to
$8,000

Short, high-intensity programs
Semester (8 to 14 weeks)
$8,000
to
$20,000

Most common gap year format
Full year (9 to 12 months)
$20,000
to
$40,000+

Multiple programs or destinations

These are industry-wide ranges. At the lower end you will typically find shorter programs, volunteer-only placements, or programs with minimal included services. At the higher end you will find fully supported semester programs with experienced instructors, multiple destinations, accommodation, meals, and all activities included.

Always compare total cost, not program fee. Some providers advertise low headline fees but charge separately for accommodation, meals, excursions, visas, and in-country transport. A program with a higher headline fee that includes all of these can be significantly better value than a cheaper one that does not.

What else should you budget for?

International flights

Pacific Discovery program fees do not include flights. Depending on your departure city and destination, budget an additional $800 to $2,500 for return flights. The admissions team can provide guidance on booking. Book early and stay flexible with dates to reduce this cost.

Travel insurance

Most accredited gap year programs require students to hold comprehensive travel insurance for the full duration of the program. This typically costs $200 to $600 for a semester depending on the level of cover and destinations involved. Medical evacuation from a remote location without insurance can cost tens of thousands of dollars, so this is not optional.

Visas

Visa requirements vary by destination and passport. Some programs assist with visa logistics; confirm with your admissions contact what is handled and what you need to arrange independently. Budget $50 to $300 per country depending on the destination.

SIM cards and data plans

Local SIM cards are the most cost-effective way to stay connected across multiple countries. Budget $10 to $30 per SIM depending on the destination, and factor in the cost of data plans for the duration of the program.

Personal spending money

With the vast majority of costs covered in the program fee, personal spending is typically modest. Budget $50 to $100 per week for personal items, souvenirs, the occasional meal outside the program, and incidentals. A semester program will typically require $500 to $1,500 in personal spending money depending on the destination.

Optional academic credit

If you choose to take optional academic credit through your gap year program, there may be an additional fee for the coursework. Confirm the exact cost with the admissions team before enrolling.

Is a gap year program worth the cost?

When broken down by day, structured semester gap year programs are often more affordable than they first appear. A 70-day program covering accommodation, all meals, activities, guided excursions, expert-led lectures, individual mentorship, and professional instruction across multiple countries can work out to less than $150 to $200 per day fully inclusive. A self-organised trip covering the same ground would typically cost more, with none of the educational scaffolding, safety infrastructure, or community connections that a structured program provides.

The harder question is whether the personal development is worth the investment. The research consistently says yes. Studies by the Gap Year Association show that gap year alumni report higher university GPAs, stronger sense of purpose, and greater career clarity than peers who did not take a gap year. The returns are not always immediately visible, but they tend to compound over time.

How Pacific Discovery approaches tuition and investment

Pacific Discovery publishes program tuition transparently on its website and in the program catalog. Tuition reflects the full cost of the on-program experience, covering accommodation, meals, activities, staffing, and pre-departure support, and also supports the local partner communities that make each program possible.

Pacific Discovery is a small organisation, which means lower overheads and more competitive pricing than many larger gap year providers, without any reduction in program quality. The admissions team is available to walk families through exactly what is included in each program fee and what to budget for separately.

Payment and deposits: A deposit secures a student's place on the program once an application is approved. Payment plans are available. Full payment details and options are provided in the enrollment packet. Contact the admissions team for current pricing, deposit amounts, and payment plan options.

Pacific Discovery scholarships and financial aid

Pacific Discovery offers scholarships and need-based financial aid specifically to broaden access to its programs. Taking a gap year should not be restricted to students whose families can cover the full cost upfront, and Pacific Discovery's scholarship program reflects that commitment.

Who scholarships are awarded to

Awards are granted based on three criteria: demonstrated financial need, commitment to the program's values of cultural immersion, service, and personal development, and contribution to a diverse and engaged cohort.

How to apply

Contact Pacific Discovery's admissions team directly for current scholarship application details, award amounts, and deadlines. Scholarship availability and amounts may vary by season and program. The admissions team can advise on which awards you may be eligible for and walk you through the application process.

Visit pacificdiscovery.org/need-to-know/scholarships-financial-aid for full details.

Do not assume a gap year is out of reach before you ask. Scholarships, payment plans, and financial aid options exist specifically for students who need support. Apply for the program you want, then explore every available funding option with the admissions team before making a decision based on cost alone.

External scholarships and funding sources

Beyond Pacific Discovery's own support, a number of external funding sources can be applied to structured gap year programs.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

A US government-funded award for undergraduate students who receive Federal Pell Grant funding and are participating in accredited international programs. Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000. Pacific Discovery's accredited programs are eligible. Applications open several times per year and are competitive.

Boren Awards

Fund US students to participate in international programs in regions critical to national security, with a focus on language learning. Awards of up to $20,000 are available. Students on Pacific Discovery programs with a language immersion component may be eligible.

Federal financial aid

Students currently enrolled in college who plan to take optional academic credit on their gap year program may be able to transfer existing financial aid to cover some program costs. This includes the Federal Pell Grant, SEOG Grant, Federal Stafford Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, and Parent PLUS Loans. Speak to your school's financial aid office to confirm eligibility and transfer requirements before enrolling.

Gap Year Association scholarship directory

The Gap Year Association maintains a regularly updated directory of scholarships available specifically for gap year students. A useful starting point for students looking beyond program-specific awards.

How to Fundraise for a Gap Year

For students who have a remaining funding gap after scholarships and financial aid, crowdfunding is a practical and increasingly common approach. Fund My Travel is a platform designed specifically for students fundraising for international travel and educational programs. Students set up a personal fundraising page, share it with family, friends, and their wider network, and invite contributions toward specific costs such as flights or the remaining program balance.

Fundraising works best when it is honest and specific. Clearly explain what program you are doing, why you chose it, and what you hope to gain. People give more readily when they understand the goal and believe in the person pursuing it.

Other approaches worth considering include part-time work in the months before departure, applying for local community or service organisation grants, and approaching employers about sponsorship in exchange for a commitment to contribute after the program ends.
