How To Plan For An International Trip

At Pacific Discovery, travel is more than just a vacation – it's a journey that changes lives. For those who are eager to explore both the world and themselves, we have curated a comprehensive guide to help you plan your first international trip.

So, you've decided to take the plunge and embark on your first international adventure! It's an exciting time, filled with anticipation and a touch of nervousness. But don't worry, with a little preparation, you'll be well on your way to a memorable trip.

Preparing for Your Adventure

Research the Destination: Delve into the rich tapestry of your chosen destination. Immerse yourself in the vibrant cultures, tantalizing cuisines, and breathtaking landscapes that await you. Learn about local customs, traditions, and etiquette – this will not only enrich your experience but also foster deeper connections with the people you meet along the way.

The more you know about your destination before you leave, the more you will be able to appreciate and understand it once you’re there. If you are joining a Pacific Discovery program, there is a recommended reading list provided in your student portal.

Budgeting: Determine your budgetary requirements - We strongly recommend you set yourself a daily budget (maximum spending allowance) so you don’t overspend or run out of money before the end of your trip. The easiest way to do this is choose a daily spending amount eg. $10. On a daily basis, only allow yourself to spend up to $10. Keep track of how much you are spending by noting what you spend in a column in your handbook or a notebook. Some days you won’t spend anything eg. if in remote location etc. Other days you might want to spend a bit more, and will be able to do so if you've kept to your budget.

Booking Flights: There are a few different ways you can book flights. Consider using an online travel agent such as Expedia, Booking.com, Skyscanner, and Google Flights, as these services all offer comprehensive search tools with filters and price comparisons to help you get the best deal. At Pacific Discovery, we use The Travellist Co. as our dedicated booking partner.

Secure Your Passport, Visa, and Travel Insurance: One of the first steps on your journey is to ensure you have a valid passport. Familiarize yourself with the visa requirements of your chosen destination, as these can vary greatly depending on your nationality. Applying for visas well in advance is crucial, as processing times may vary. You'll also need travel insurance in the event of medical expenses due to sickness or accident, and emergency medical evacuation abroad. Travel insurance may also include cover for loss of baggage or personal effects, personal liability, and trip cancellation or trip interruption. We use The Travellist Co. to ensure every student has the right policy. If you're travelling with Pacific Discovery, remember to upload proof of your cover to the travel documents upload page in your student portal.

What To Pack

Packing for an international trip can be overwhelming. The key is to pack light and versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. Your clothes should also suit the local climate and cultural sensitivities. Here are some essentials to consider:

Essential clothing: Comfortable shoes, versatile outfits, a warm layer for cooler evenings, and swimwear if you're headed to a beach destination. Consider the clothes you’re packing as many countries have a modest dress code. By dressing inappropriately you may be putting a barrier between yourself and the people you want to interact with. Loose clothing that covers limbs not only protects you from the sun and insects, but also will ensure you’re more readily accepted by local communities.

Toiletries: Travel-sized toiletries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. Many developing countries don’t have very good waste collection services, so try to leave excess packaging at home and when you’re buying toiletries, we recommend bio-degradable products.

Accessories: Leave expensive jewelry, sunglasses and clothing at home – not only can it attract unwanted attention, but it’s a tactless reminder of the differing standards of wealth between the ‘west’ and the developing world.

Electronics: Chargers, adapters, and any essential devices like a laptop or camera.

Documents: Passport, visas (if required), travel insurance, and any necessary booking confirmations.

Less is more: Leave room for the souvenirs and memories you'll collect along the way.

Don’t forget to pack an open mind! As you embark on your transformative adventure, it's essential to pack an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. Shed your preconceived notions and prepare to step outside your comfort zone. By doing so, you'll amplify your personal growth and truly immerse yourself in the local culture.

Navigating International Airports

International airports can be a maze, but with a little planning, you'll be able to navigate them like a pro. Here are some tips:

Be Organized: Familiarize yourself with the layout of the airport before your departure. Arrive early to avoid any unnecessary stress and ensure a smooth check-in process. Keep all important documents, including your passport, visa, boarding passes, and travel itinerary, easily accessible in a secure travel wallet.

Embrace Adventure: Airports are gateways to new discoveries. Take the time to explore their unique offerings – from indulging in local cuisine to shopping for intriguing souvenirs. These moments of exploration will add an extra layer of excitement to your journey.

Language Barriers and Cultural Immersion

If you're traveling to a country where you don't speak the language, don't worry. There are several ways to communicate effectively:

Learn Key Phrases: Although English may be widely spoken in many tourist areas, learning a few basic phrases in the local language will open doors and warm hearts. Locals appreciate the effort, and with a simple "hello" or "thank you," you can forge deeper connections with the communities you encounter.

Use a translation app: There are many translation apps available that can help you communicate with locals if you get stuck.

Use gestures and body language: Sometimes, gestures and body language can be more effective than words.

Cultural Immersion Activities: Participating in cultural immersion activities such as homestays, volunteering, or attending local festivals will allow you to gain a more profound understanding of the destination's traditions and values. These immersive experiences will enrich your journey and promote personal growth.

Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Trip

Research your destination: Learn about the local culture, customs, and etiquette.

Stay safe: Be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to avoid scams and theft.

Be flexible: Things don't always go according to plan, so be prepared to be flexible.

Enjoy the experience: International travel is a wonderful opportunity to experience new cultures and make unforgettable memories.

As you prepare to embark on your first international trip, remember that you are not only embarking on a physical adventure, but also a transformative journey of self-discovery. Pacific Discovery is here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring that you create lifelong memories while fostering personal growth, cultural immersion, and service to others. Pack your bags, buckle up, and get ready to embark on an epic adventure that will shape your understanding of the world and leave a lasting impact on your life. Bon voyage!
