I have yet to be disappointed by Vietnam and its culture. Meeting the
people seems to be one of the many highlights of this trip allowing us a
better understanding of the culture. After a grueling bike ride out of Sapa
up what felt like a mountain, we came to a village, Ta Phin, where we were
given a tour. They brought us to a cave, had us meander through rice
paddies, and answered any questions we might have had. Perhaps the biggest
appeal to this village was the children. While waiting for our bus to come
pick us up, many women tried to sell us purses and bracelets. Without much
money, we declined and waited. Nikki brought out her photo album which drew
many young girls over. She showed them pictures of her dog, boyfriend, and
family teaching them their names. Randyn taught one little girl to properly
fist pump which they thought was hilarious and silly. One of the little
girls was so cute, Randyn was tempted to kidnap her and bring her home. We
each went through our bags with them, trying to make them giggle whether it
was with my glasses or scissors.

Although this experience was small compared to the caves or sea kayaking,
it was very gratifying. Being able to connect to others, breaking through
both a language and age barrier, was something that doesn’t happen as often
as it should. Their faces and laughs will be one of the things I will be
taking home with me.
