Pacific Discovery is proud to announce that we are now offering scholarships for participation on our gap year semester programs.

We want to make our programs as accessible as possible. Although we charge the minimum we can for our programs, we recognize that they can still be difficult to fund for many families. Scholarships awarded will vary from $1,000 - $7,500 and are only for our semester programs. All scholarships will only be awarded to individuals who have not studied abroad before.

Applications open:

  • June 1st for the following Fall Semester
  • September 1st for the following Spring Semester

Please check back here on those dates for application details.

Please note that these scholarships do not include the cost of international flights. We expect scholarship recipients to demonstrate their commitment to this opportunity by fund-raising for their international flights and personal spending.

We have four types of scholarships:

Diversity Scholarship

We are offering a diversity scholarship to support individuals who are from a racially or ethnically under-represented population in the USA, to participate in an overseas experiential education program. If you meet the following criteria then you can apply.
- Ethnic or Racial minority
- Your gross family income is below $60,000 per year

Low-Income Scholarship

You can apply for this scholarship if your family earns less than $45,000 per year, or if you are a first-generation college student and your family earns less than $55,000 per year.

Media Scholarship

This scholarship is for a student who is studying for, or just recently graduated with, a degree in media studies. Depending on your focus, if you are the successful recipient of this scholarship, you will be required to apply your media skills to document the groups experience on the program you are placed in (which will be chosen by Pacific Discovery). You will be required to supply an example of your work in the application.

Nelson/Tasman Region Change-Maker Scholarship

This scholarship is a full scholarship (excluding international flights) for a high school graduate from the Nelson Tasman region. There is one scholarship awarded annually. This scholarship is awarded to students who have not previously traveled overseas, whose gross family income is below NZD$60,000 per year, and who can demonstrate that they are positively involved in their community (volunteering, coaching etc).

External Scholarships

There are thousands of scholarships offered to students who want to study abroad and we are happy to provide any supporting documentation to assist you with independent scholarship applications. If you are stuck on where to start looking, please contact us and we can get you started.

Financial Aid

There are numerous financial aid options available to those who are already enrolled in College/University and plan to take academic credit or those who organize their own independent/field study or internship while on the program. We suggest that you speak with your school’s financial aid office to see if you can transfer your existing grants or loans to cover some of the costs of our tuition.

If you have not already applied for financial aid you should check to see if you are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunities Grant (SEOG grant), Federal Stafford Loan, Federal Perkins Loan, and Parent PLUS Loans for Undergraduate Students.

Please contact us with any financial aid questions.

We encourage you to fundraise for your program

A popular tool for this is Fund My Travel, where you set up your own fundraising page, then share this with family and friends, and encourage them to support your experience by donating towards your travel costs. Fund My Travel was established by GoAbroad.com, to help students fund meaningful travel experiences.
