Finding our center in northern Thailand

After an incredible first week in Thailand, some new promising adventures awaited  us in the next days.  We were introduced to Thai Buddhism and participated in a two-day meditation course. Me and many others of the group realized that meditating is not only sitting on a cushion and being lazy; it is a way to clear our 'monkey minds'. A means to calm down and a way of balancing our emotions as an ultimate goal to live a happy life. In our busy daily lives, we do not take… Read more

Beginning of Thai adventure!

During our first day in Bangkok, we experimented with different forms of transportation like the river taxi, and crazy tuk tuks weaving through traffic. We also visited a temple: lots of Buddhas, lots of bells, lots of stairs! The group did stick fortune telling there after paying respect to the Triple Gem, lifting an elephant statue with one finger, emptying one stick from a can, and coordinating the stick number to the fortunes posted on the wall. For dinner, the grou… Read more

Cooking, trekking and more

After our unforgettable first week in the colorful country of Thailand, the group embarked on a spiritual journey to the outskirts of Chiang Mai where we were treated to a silent Meditation Retreat lead by monk ‘KK’. Wearing all white from head to toe and unplugging from the outside world, the group gained many lessons both practical and spiritual from the 2 days of meditation and silent reflection. After waking up at 5am for morning gong and chanting we finished our las… Read more

Making our way through the land of smiles

Our first week in Thailand has been a whirlwind of wonderful experiences. We started off exploring the pulsating streets of Bangkok, taking in the juxtaposition of fast paced city life and peaceful ancient temples. After visiting the reclining Buddha, taking water taxis, seeing silk entrepreneur John Thompson's expansive home and dining at one of Bangkok's many malls, we were ready to embark on the next part of our month long journey. Early in the morning, the group set… Read more

Goodbye Thailand!

Today, our fantastic PacDiscoThaiJuly group (as no one calls us... yet) said our goodbyes to each other and to this wonderful country. We're leaving on a high note, though! Last week, we ventured into the jungle to spend time in Khao Sok National Park. Between hiking, swimming, and a trip to relaxing hot springs, we began the more relaxed portion of our journey while staying occupied and even hosting a group viewing of Frozen in the bar area of Our Jungle House! We trie… Read more

A Belated Thank-You to Elephant Nature Park

Many people in our group had never had an encounter with Thailand's most majestic animal... The elephant. Prior to our arrival, we all had the stereotypical expectations of what that experience would be; elephant riding, elephant painting, and petting the babies. Excited and exhilarated, we soon realized that at Elephant Nature Park, there are more natural and rewarding ways to interact with elephants... And we walked away impassioned and informed of the hardships of the… Read more

Rocking around Thailand

Hellooooo bloggers, it's your crew from Pacific Discovery Thailand! We just spent our first week here in Thailand and I gotta say.... it's been amazing. Having arrived in Bangkok, we were shocked by the vibrant city of friendly faces, food stalls, and humidity. The vivid colors of Khao San Road, the relaxation of a Thai massage, and the majestic temples were a good taste of the culture and people of Thailand. Soon we were on our way to the old capital of Thailand, … Read more

Khao Sok National Park

It may have been raining when we go to our accommodation in Khao Sok National Park but that didn't stop us from being excited for our next couple of days exploring the jungle. Our new spot, The Jungle House, is where we would stay for the next three nights... Some of our group slept in riverside bungalows and some up high in gorgeous tree houses. Our first day was spent on a jungle hike with our local guides who taught us about the different trees and life in the jungle.… Read more

Elephant Nature Park - Part 3

The Elephant Nature Park has been my favorite part of the trip so far! It is a beautiful sanctuary for elephants who have been abused by their mahout (trainer), put through the phajaan torture training (a torture phase to turn the elephant submissive so they know their owner is in control), used for illegal logging, trekking, breeding programs, and trained to perform demeaning circus tricks. A lot of the elephants suffered in their past but are now living the life they d… Read more

Pai Trekking

The start of our two day trekking trip began at 5:30 am in Chiang Mai. We drove for three hours on an extremely windy road but the scenery was beautiful. We arrived in Pai at our first destination where we unloaded our backpacks, ate some snacks and met our tour guide. After, we drove a little further until we reached the trailhead. The hike began with a very steep incline which got us all huffing and puffing. We finally reached the top of the first hill where we looked … Read more
