Gentle but Dramatic Giants

Leaving the hippie town of Pai, we started our lengthy journey of windy highway roads to Elephant Nature Park (ENP). Upon arrival, we were quickly introduced to our incredible tour guide, Apple. We then had orientation, giving us information on the history of elephants in Thailand. After orientation, some of us were lucky enough to help out at the animal shelter by walking rescued dogs. In the afternoon, there was a ceremony for all the new volunteers for the week. In th… Read more

From Pad Thai to Pai

What an amazing two days! We were finally in one place long enough to call it "home." We woke up to meet the fabulous Yui for an authentic Thai cooking class. We started at the market where locals gather to sell their crops from the day. Tables of freshly picked fruits and vegetables were as far as you can see. Just pass the fruits were tables of pre-prepared food to grab on the go. Then everyone's favorite place- the meat room. We won't go into detail but that was quite… Read more

From Caving to Calm

In our minds, reading “climbing and caving adventure” on the itinerary filled our imaginations with images of plastic walls, two hour long safety demonstrations, and natural wonders gleaming in florescent lights and the flash of cameras from bundles of tourists. However, we were soon awakened to discover that this adventure was going to push us and bond us much more than what we had anticipated. Within the first few hours of our adventure we found ourselves repelling 40… Read more

After our debriefing our awesome Volunteer coordinator, Apple took us for a walk around the park showing us where everything is and we had our first up close encounter with an elephant. Then we went to our rooms for a much need… Read more

Trekking our way to Burma

When I was younger, my parents used to make my sister and I go on long hikes through the woods every Sunday. We honestly hated it, but I was so ridiculously grateful for it after surviving a 15-mile trek through the jungle to a small village on the Thailand-Burma border. We were accompanied by a stray dog that we named Baxter, and he impressed us with his innate trekking abilities as we crossed rivers and climbed up the steepest hills I have ever seen. That night, the gr… Read more
