We spent the last weekend rock climbing and caving in the mountains around Chiang Mai. As a group, we learned a lot about the physical demands of the sport but also though the challenges, we learned a lot about ourselves. Ignoring the brief abseil I did when I was ten years old, I'd never done this kind of thing before. We started with a "warm up" rappel to practice our skills. This turned out to be quite easy for most but our big first day challenge was to rappel down a 40 meter stretch of rock, into the darkness of a cave below. That was the scariest bit for me but once I started moving, adrenaline and all, I was able to rappel to the bottom and even enjoyed it! Next, we began the rock climbing portion. This was the most challenging but also most rewarding part of the first day. After a brief demonstration from the CMRCA team, it was our turn to try our hand at rock climbing. There were five different climbs, of ranging difficulty, so plenty for the amateur (me) to attempt, as well as having enough for the more seasoned climbers to do.

Our team was great - our guides were really supportive and encouraging. The second day was an amazing experience for everyone; scary, challenging, thrilling and totally unique. We practiced the skills we learned the day before. With the guides expertly learning us into the cave, it all became less terrifying and more enjoyable knowing we were in good hands. The whole weekend, including the evening Thai lesson and bonfire, was so much fun. It pushed the whole team to their limits leaving us dirty, sweaty and exhausted but very proud of ourselves. Before joining Pacific Discovery, I'd never know that I was capable of climbing 40m out of a pitch black cave, but now I do. So thanks PD, for a great weekend.
