Let’s talk through exactly how it works when applying and gaining your PSU credits for our programs.

If applying for Portland State University credits, there is a simple process to follow to ensure that you will successfully gain your college credits.

Please note that Seattle Central College (rather than Portland State University) is our only option for those looking to gain college credits for Summer Programs.

How does it work?

Portland State University (PSU) operates, as most larger Accredited State institutions do, on a quarter-credit basis. This means that three-quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) usually counts as a full academic year.

Students are able to enroll in up to 4 courses total which is equivalent to almost a semesters worth of credit.

It is important to clarify that the responsibility on completing requirements to qualify lies with the student, not Pacific Discovery. So please understand the steps you need to take to ensure you gain your credits.

How does this affect me on program?

On program there are very few requirements, the majority of your PSU coursework work is completed upon your return home. The number one requirement of your school work is to participate in your program fully. You will not need to bring a lap top or take time away from the program activities to do school work on program. For most of the classes available, the only requirement on program is to keep a daily journal. There are a few courses where you would need to give a short presentation about what you have learned to your fellow group mates. Upon your return home from program, you will complete the required reading and writing detailed in your syllabi.

Can I use my 529 account towards the college credit and tuition?

Yes, you can! If you are enrolled in a semester program and take a full semesters worth of college credit, you are eligible to use your 529 account for the $1700 PSU fee as well as your entire program tuition!

Step 3: Download your Course Syllabus found on the link next to the course listing above and read your PSU FAQ's

Step 4: Get connected with your personal grading assistant and enjoy your program!

NOTE: You can add/change/drop any individual courses at any time, but changes will need to be logged and a  $100 penalty will be incurred if you drop all PSU courses after you submit your roster. There is also a $100 late or “rush fee” if you elect to take courses after the roster is submitted.
7. You then submit your journal and all papers to the GYA PO Box by the relevant dates assigned by your grading assistant.
8. Grading instructor assesses and gives grades to PSU.

How long does it take for grades to process?

Once the Instructor of Record pushes the grades to PSU, it takes them as long as 6 weeks – although typically only 2 weeks to process. If a rush is needed for ongoing transfer or a progress report, you should contact ethan@gapyearassociation.org to see about a special case.

What happens if a student gets bad grades on their course? Is there a re-write option?

All re-writes are the discretion of the grading instructor and must be pursued privately between the student and the grading instructor. Extensions, and exceptions must also be cleared by the instructor of record.

How long do students have to complete coursework?

Students technically have a full year to complete coursework. Extensions are at the discretion of the grading instructor and must be individually asked for. If students do not ask for an extension and do not submit coursework, they will still be charged full fees. The official deadline is June 20 / January 20th for submission of papers.
