Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the most interesting countries you will ever visit, with stunning natural landscapes and a fascinating society and culture. The country is astoundingly diverse, stretching along a fertile coastal strip of land sandwiched between the South China Sea and rugged forest-draped mountains bordering Laos. Most of Vietnam has a monsoonal climate, with the exception of the far north, which is more seasonal. Vietnam is exciting and vibrant with a population of some 90 million people from 54 different ethnicities. Whilst a communist country, with the painful scars of war in its past, the Vietnamese harbor Westerners no ill feelings. Remnants of French colonialism are still observed through architecture, food, tree-lined boulevards and a thriving cafe culture.
Vietnam’s history has been characterised by a conflict between imposed rule from other countries and the Vietnamese people’s strong desire for independence. Today, 2 million travellers visit Vietnam annually and it is an exciting country to travel in. People are very welcoming, and the isolation and efforts of the government to limit Western influence and encourage support of their own culture, have enabled Vietnam to remain much more culturally intact than most other Asian countries.
