Laos
In Laos time moves slowly, much like the languid Mekong River that flows through the country. This unhurried pace of life, the warmth and diversity of its people, French colonial influences and ever dramatic landscapes, makes Laos great for travel.
Landlocked Laos is the poorest Southeast Asian country and most sparsely inhabited, with a population of just 5.5 million. Most of the country is rugged, mountainous and home to over 50 ethnic groups who have retained their centuries-old traditions and way of life. It has several beautiful National Parks with a fantastic array of flora and fauna.
Laos, officially known as Lao People's Democratic Republic, was, along with Cambodia and Vietnam, a French colony, forming French Indochina. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Laos fought for and gained independence from the French. Twenty years of political unrest and civil war followed until 1975 when the communist Pathet Lao gained power and closed the country to visitors. Since the 1990s foreigners have been allowed to travel freely in Laos.
Our favourite areas to explore in Laos are the Luang Nam Tha district, Luang Prabang, and the Four Thousand Islands.
