Wombats and Wallabies…

Freshly returned from a day at Steve Irwin’s Australia Zoo, the vibes at the hostel are relaxed and jovial… It is evident that our countless conversations, group meals and shared adventures have expedited the getting-to-know-you process as we are more of a family now than the group of strangers at the airport on day one. Snacking on dessert (fantales, jaffas, lamingtons and other lollies) and sipping hot chocolate, we played a mad game of team charades in the hostel lounge room. A member from each team simultaneously acted out a selected word or phrase, as the two teams raced to guess the correct answer first. The theme of the game was The Trip So Far and we laughed and competed, reenacting activities, people, places and phrases from the past 11 days in Australia – from ‘Steve Irwin’ to ‘ocean kayaking’ and ‘timtam slams’ to ‘kangaroo’… from ‘the Big Banana’ to ‘the back of the van’ and ‘surfing’ to ‘the Sydney Opera House.’

Though we didn’t keep score, the competition was fierce but the mood fun as we remembered the whole of the trip so far – Sydney’s famous buildings & beaches and abseiling into narrow sandstone canyons in the Blue Mountains, early morning surfing sessions and kayaking with dolphins at the country’s eastern-most point, campfire sing-a-longs and crocodile shows…
Here’s a shout out from the crew about Something We’ve Learned Since Being in Australia:

2) That a wombat can break a dingo’s skull with a whack of their bum. (Maddy)
3) That going for a ‘bushwalk’ in flip-flops is a bad idea. Fair Dinkum! (Ro)
4) That aboriginal people listen to hardcore rap music. (Alaina)
5) That when koalas are born they look like a fleshy jellybean. (Alex)
6) How to do a timtam slam! (Zara)

8) If you crazy glue your wounds, it won’t hurt when you go into saltwater (Harrison)
9)You should do everything once (Liz)
