Fraser Island!

Although our three days on Fraser weren’t necessarily what we had initially expected, they turned out to be some of the best days of the trip. Our guide, Neil, really made the experience. A vast encyclopedia of Fraser Island knowledge, he taught us a lot about the sites we saw and the unique features of the beautiful island (did you know that Fraser is the biggest sand island in the world!?).

Our first day was spent cruising the 75 miles of pristine beach in our souped up 4×4. We visited a natural fresh water lazy river, floating all the way down to the beach (a few of us braving the the cold water). We finished off the day taking in the beautiful views from atop Indian Head (one of the volcanic pinnacles on the island). We even saw some whales!

On the second day, most of our crew woke up at 5:45 to watch the sunrise over the massive beach. It was a beautiful sight. We started the day taking a walk through the rainforest. It felt like we were walking with dinosaurs! Some of us got into the setting, transforming ourselves into acient creatures. We also saw a 1,800 year-old fern!! After our walk, we headed down the beach to Lake Wabby. It was a 45 minute walk through the forest to get to the lake, ending with us emerging on a sand dune that led down to the water. After a quick swim we made our way back to Dilli Village, where we were staying. The day ended with a delicious cooked meal catered by Neil. (The food was AWESOME).
We spent our final day on Fraser visiting its famous freshwater lakes. After an early morning walk through the forest, dodging lots of giant spiders, we arrived at Lake Boomanjin, a reddish-brown colored lake resulting from the tea tree oil that seeps into the water. Once we had our morning tea, we headed over to Lake Birrabeen, a beautiful clear water lake with pristine white sand, which we found out could be used to shine our jewellery AND teeth!! Our final stop was lake McKenzie, Fraser Island’s largest freshwater lake. After taking some funny pictures in the lake, we all piled back into the 4×4 and headed out to the barge. Good Bye Fraser!! We’ll miss you!
