Fuelled on energy and anticipation of meeting the group, I set off for the airport in the pre-dawn calm of Sydney city. Though dark and quiet outside, the international terminal was abuzz of lights, screens and people – departing, returning or greeting others in the typical airport intensity. A slowly-sipped coffee and a sunrise later, we were twelve travellers piling into our clean van and heading towards the famous Bondi Beach on Sydney's eastside. Most of us braved the cold for a morning dip in the Pacific Ocean, before flat whites, brekky, and briefing of the program.
The afternoon flew by, and teams set off on an Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt to explore the city's landmarks, lingo and locals. Back at the hostel for a first group dinner we laughed, talked and ate – amazed at how much we had seen and done on such an epic first day! More to come as we see the rest of Australia's largest city tomorrow and head into the incredible Blue Mountains wilderness the following days…
