Adventures on North Keppel Island

Dear Friends and Family,

Cooper here (Maddee’s stuffed pet wombat). We just spent the last week on North Keppel Island snorkelling, hanging out with 5th graders, and VOLUNTEERING! Throughout the week, I watched the group do a lot of conservation projects such as repairing a dam within the island and watching some ladies learn how to whipper-snipper. (In the States we call that weed-whacking).

Snorkeling was a hoot – I didn’t jump in because I didn’t want to get my fur wet. (oh yeah, and I don’t know how to swim)!

Hangin’ with the 5th graders was so fun! These guys were from a small Australian school and they definitely kept things lively. We also spent a lot of time playing games with them like throwing the frisbee, a mix of American football and rugby, and they also taught us funny Australian words like golly which is a loogie in the States. (Gross!)
Stargazing at night was also pretty cool and we learned how to find the Southern Cross, a constellation that shows you how to find South. I searched for the Big Dipper but I couldn’t find it! Hmm, wrong hemisphere maybe… A couple of nights we had a nice campfire going, and we tried to explain to the Aussies what they were missing out on… S’MORES!!!
The island was beautiful and on our last night, we had a “Jungle Party” (I fit right in)! Chris and Chris, the lovely couple that cooked, made dinner for us and we ate outside overlooking the sunset, beach and ocean – so beautiful!
Looking forward to more adventures!! Yay!
Love, Beach, and Aussies,
Cooper (Maddee’s pet wombat) (as told to Aurora and Maddee).
